About C.J. Folly

Hi! I’m C.J. Folly, and I write young adult fantasy with fierce heroines and a little (or a lot) of magic. I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember—my first “book” was a knock-off Encyclopedia Brown story I wrote in second grade. Since then, my imagination has only gotten bigger, and so have the stories. I’m fascinated by the narratives of women whose lives were overshadowed—or ended—by men’s ideas of power and virtue. My best stories reimagine classic injustices in fresh, fantastical ways.

My writing journey

Christopher Paolini and his Inheritance Cycle was my gateway into dragons, and after meeting him in grade school I knew I was hooked on both writing and YA fantasy.

I wrote my first book in sixth grade with the help of very patient teachers who let me write during class. By high school I’d written three novels by hand and also received by first rejection letter from a publisher.

While I have a laptop now (they weren’t so affordable in 2005!), I still write my most emotional scenes by hand in the most crowded coffee shop I can find. Something about the background noise and chaos takes me back to those school days, and it’s where my best ideas come to life.
